LMSW

Being willing to ask for help outside of your family or friends is an extremely vulnerable experience for most people. Seeking mental healthcare is a daunting prospect, and I applaud you for considering it and taking action. My goal is to hold space for exploring the struggles you or your family face in a judgement-free and nurturing environment. As a therapist my role is to remain an objective observer of the larger picture of your life and provide neutral, supportive guidance toward your goals. Whether you are seeking services for yourself or your children, my door is open. I have worked in the mental healthcare field since 2008 in a variety of settings including residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient treatment, and private practice. I also have experience working in the foster care system, as well as in addiction treatment. The common in thread in each of these areas is trauma, which led me to focus my graduate education on the treatment of trauma and anxiety-related disorders. I am currently pursuing certification as a registered play therapist, and further specialized certification in the Trauma Play model of play therapy.

Shelby received her graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. She attended the University of Memphis for her Bachelors in Psychology. Shelby pays attention to detail and wants to get to the deeper meaning of the issues people face. Her areas of interest include working with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, self-esteem, domestic violence issues, relationship issues, and other life stressors. Shelby prides herself in being a holistic counselor, connecting the body and mind to a person’s current issues. She believes that only you have the power to change, and that she is your facilitator through the struggles. Shelby enjoys when people are honest with her; she knows that this honesty fosters a sense of therapeutic alliance between herself and her clients. While Shelby believes that Integrative Therapy is useful for most clients, she recognizes that CBT, ACT, and DBT are especially effective in the therapeutic process.

Justin Bourland

Intern

Originally from Virginia, Justin's family moved to the Memphis area when he was a young child. He was raised in the town of Munford, located just North of Memphis. After high school, he attended the University of Mississippi where he received a bachelor’s degree in education in 2012. He is working toward earning a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Bradley University.

As a counselor, he believes in creating a space where clients feel heard, supported, and challenged in ways that create meaningful change. His counseling philosophy is grounded in evidence-based practices, primarily Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and a Solution-Focused Approach. These modalities complement each other by offering both present-focused strategies and long-term mindset shifts that help clients build resilience and move toward their goals.

Using ACT, he helps clients explore how to live a life aligned with their values, even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions. He guides clients in developing psychological flexibility by fostering acceptance and mindfulness, while encouraging committed action that supports growth.

CBT allows him to work with clients in identifying and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress. Through structured, goal-oriented conversations, clients learn practical tools to challenge cognitive distortions and manage stress.

Incorporating a Solution-Focused Approach, he emphasizes clients' strengths and past successes. Rather than focusing primarily on problems, he supports clients in envisioning a preferred future and identifying small, attainable steps that lead them toward their goals.

Above all, he sees the therapeutic relationship as the foundation of effective counseling, and strives to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel free to express themselves in the most honest way. His aim is to support individuals in their efforts to develop greater self-awareness, self-compassion, and the confidence to navigate all of life’s challenges.

If you would like to schedule a time to speak/meet with Justin, call (901) 430-5009 or click the button below to e-mail.
